The Golden Isles, A Target Rich Environment

By Nancy Kring Rowan, Jekyll Island Arts Association

Works by Painter George NethertonJekyll Island, GA: Painter, George Netherton and metal sculptor, Tyler Dominey feel the Golden Isles are a target rich, inspirational environment for natural light and beauty. These talented artists will be showcasing their inspired works in an upcoming exhibit sponsored by the Jekyll Island Arts Association in the Gallery of Goodyear Cottage in Jekyll Island’s Historic District.

Born in the Golden Isles of Brunswick, Georgia, metal sculptor Tyler Dominey became a propeller Blacksmith at his family’s marine machinery business. Growing up on the coast, he always had a passion for sea life.  Regular visits to Disney World expanded his creative perception of what was possible. Tyler is a strong believer in imagination and feels there are no limits when it comes to his metal sculptures.

Tyler Dominey with metal sculpture.“One must find new and more interesting ways to create things. When a person stops this process, he is dying,” states Tyler.

Gradually working up from single sheet sculptures to full dimensional, layered work, Tyler challenges himself to form even more unique sculptures, showing greater creativity and gracefulness with each design.  His work is on exhibit in many galleries and private collections in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia.

Forms, colors and light discovered and found in nature are most intriguing to Painter, George Netherton. He claims it is this context of nature that gives these elements life. It is also what makes it challenging and elusive.

Growing up in New York, where he had opportunities to visit many of the great museums and galleries, George was always fascinated by design and form. His greatest influences come from many of the American Masters and California Impressionists. While traveling on business, George would seek out galleries, exhibits and museums to enjoy their work. Finally, nine years ago, he sought out his own instructor for weekly lessons in the art form he loves.

George is the past President of the Georgia Coastal Artists Guild and specializes in landscape and architectural paintings.  For more information call 635-3092.
